What To Do If You Suspect Heat Stroke

  3. Start cooling immediately: Do not wait for paramedics before taking action, and cool the person in whatever ways you can before they arrive.
  4. Remove extra clothing: Take off jackets, helmets, pads, or tight layers if you can do so safely.
  5. Keep them lying down: If they are confused, faint, or unconscious, keep them safe and monitor breathing.
  6. Do not give fluids if they are confused or unconscious: They could choke. Only give small sips of cool water if they are fully awake, alert, and able to swallow.

Effective Cooling Methods

The goal is to cool the body as quickly as possible. Use whatever safe method is available.

Good cooling methods include:

  • Cold-water immersion: Place the person in a tub, kiddie pool, or large container of cold water if available and safe.
  • Cool shower or hose: Spray or shower them with cool water.
  • Wet cloths or towels: Place cool, wet towels on the body and replace them often.
  • Ice packs: Place ice packs on the neck, armpits, and groin.
  • Fan and mist: Wet the skin and fan the person to increase cooling.
  • Remove heat-trapping gear: Take off sports equipment, work gear, or heavy clothing.

What NOT to do:

  • Do not cover the person with dry blankets: You’ll trap heat.
  • Do not give alcohol: Even if it’s cold, alcohol dilates blood vessels and accelerates dehydration.
  • Do not give caffeine: Like alcohol, it’s a diuretic. It can also increase heart rate and metabolic heat production.
  • Do not give fever-reducing medicine: Heat stroke is not the same as a fever from infection.

Who Is Most at Risk?
