AED CPR training (Automated external defibrillator AED, cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR) is beneficial no matter your profession, but especially so if
- You help oversee people of all ages (adults, children, and infants).
- Your job involves strenuous physical activity.
As a gym instructor, both conditions apply. This means it’s certainly possible for gym instructors to find themselves in emergency situations where they must step in to save a life. Learning CPR isn’t just beneficial; it’s necessary.
During or after exercise, medical emergencies like sudden cardiac arrest or a heart attack can happen to any one of your clients. If you, as the gym instructor, have successfully completed a CPR class, first aid training course, or training program to become CPR certified, your clients’ chances of survival during an emergency significantly increase.
Doctors aren’t the only ones in the business of saving lives; most gyms require their instructors to be certified to perform CPR before they can work. Any emergency (medical or otherwise) can happen at any moment, and as a gym instructor, you must be able to respond quickly, calmly, and effectively.
What is CPR in the gym?
Administering CPR in the gym shouldn’t be too different than administering it in any other environment.
CPR training involves learning how to pick up on signs of cardiac arrest, how to properly perform chest compressions and rescue breaths, and how to use an AED to shock a person’s heart back into a normal rhythm.
Thankfully, cardiac arrest caused by a workout is rare, but it can happen. As a gym instructor, you must make sure your client isn’t pushing themselves too hard. Determining their fitness level and target heart rate is essential before starting an exercise program or fitness routine.
Overexerting yourself during exercise is dangerous. Adopting a three-step approach of warming up, conditioning, and cooling down is recommended and ensures you are exercising safely and listening to your body’s cues. Staying hydrated and breathing normally is equally as important.
What is the most recognized CPR certification?
CPR Certifications are typically valid for 2 years and then continually must be renewed.
The American AED/CPR online course is a comprehensive option designed for healthcare providers, gym instructors, doctors, lifeguards, airline employees, and anyone who has a CPR certification requirement tied to their employment.
For over 20 years (since 1999), the American AED/CPR Association has offered classes to schools, hospitals, state programs, physical training programs, and more.
All online courses
- are fully AHA/ECC/ILCOR/OSHA compliant,
- align with the latest guidelines and information,
- and are taught by AHA instructor trainers each with over 25 years of experience
Once you have taken a course with AEDCPR, you also have lifelong access to all future updates that become available.
When your CPR certification expires or approaches expiration, the American AED/CPR Association makes it super easy to renew it within 6 months. You can easily do this online and have your updated CPR card sent to you via mail as soon as possible. If your CPR certification is expired for more than 6 months, you will have to take the full CPR course again.
It is crucial to renew your certification again and again as there is always the possibility that standards and public health information may have changed.
In American AEDCPR classes, we teach CAB(D), which stands for Circulation, Airway, Breathing, and Defibrillation. This method has been discussed at large in many studies that focus on cardiac arrest survival and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).
The standard before the CAB(D) was the “ABC’s of cardiopulmonary resuscitation,” or “Airway, Breathing, and Circulation.” At first, the standard was to focus on opening a person’s airway to provide oxygen. Now, the standard is to provide solid chest compressions and early defibrillation, which has shown to increase one’s chances of survival.
Constantly renewing your CPR certification is the best way to stay up to date on the current best life-saving practices.
Is an Online CPR Certification Valid?
Our online AED CPR certifications are valid. Online certification courses are growing in popularity because of their flexibility and convenience. Our classes can be taken at any time and on most devices. Most people enjoy taking the class at their own pace and having access to the same 25-question, multiple-choice test you would have taken in a live, in-person AED/CPR class.
