With this in mind, let\u2019s take a look at some of the questions we often hear about BLS certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is BLS certification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>BLS stands for Basic Life Support. This is the version of CPR, and first aid used by professionals\u2013in fact, it\u2019s fair to think of BLS classes as an advanced professional-level CPR training course. Those who complete the course, and pass a rigorous test, earn their BLS certification card.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BLS training will cover much of the same material you\u2019d learn in a CPR class, but also includes additional training specific to healthcare professionals, and professional rescuers. For example, you may learn how to identify a cardiac arrest, and standard cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) chest compressions, but in a BLS class you will also learn&nbsp; 2 rescuer CPR and how to use a bag valve mask<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who needs BLS certification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>BLS is a standard credential for healthcare providers and others in the medical field (such as medical assistants, doctors, and nurses). It is also a required credential for&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>EMTs and paramedics<\/li><li>Police officers<\/li><li>Firefighters<\/li><li>Lifeguards<\/li><li>Dentists, dental assistants and hygienists,<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And more. As we\u2019ve said before <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aedcpr.com\/articles\/what-is-bls-certification\/\">in our blog<\/a>, \u201cIn general, you will need to have certification in BLS if your job makes you likely to encounter a medical emergency.&nbsp; But you don\u2019t need to be a healthcare provider to take the Basic Life Support class, anyone can learn these life-saving skills.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I get BLS certification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you work in one of the industries we mentioned above, you would traditionally have had to find a BLS class in person. These would be taught through colleges, universities, hospitals, or in partnership with community organizations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some, especially those with complicated schedules or who live in remote locations, the challenge of finding a class to join meant hours of searching or weeks of waiting for an open spot.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, it is now possible to complete your BLS certification online. An online course can make it easier than ever for medical professionals and others to get BLS course materials, learn to perform CPR, and meet the BLS certification requirement from the comfort of their own homes. Mike helped develop one of the first online learning platforms for the NYS department of labor. He continues to develop new and innovative online tools. After years of teaching and performing emergency medical procedures, it was Mike who needed CPR. After an accident racing offshore powerboats, Mike was saved by a team of well-trained rescuers with only seconds to spare. Mike was raised in New York, where at a young age he became an instructor for the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council, the American Safety Health Institute (ASHI), and the American Heart Association (AHA). He then earned a BS in Mathematics and trained to become a paramedic. In 1995, Mike began teaching emergency medical and continuing education classes at hospitals, schools, and other institutions. He has taught at Molloy College, New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital to name a few. In 1999, Mike founded the American AED CPR Association (AEDCPR), an organization specializing in emergency cardiac care training. Under his leadership, AEDCPR has expanded throughout the United States, and internationally into Europe, Asia, and Africa. Through their network of instructors and innovative website, they have trained over a million people in CPR, AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens . Mike helped develop one of the first online learning platforms for the NYS department of labor. He continues to develop new and innovative online tools. This is why the American AED CPR Association has been recognized as a leader in both online and blended classroom training. After years of teaching and performing emergency medical procedures, it was Mike who needed CPR. After an accident racing offshore powerboats, Mike was saved by a team of well-trained rescuers with only seconds to spare.
