If you&#8217;re entering healthcare or need CPR certification for your job, understanding what BLS covers can help you choose the right course and be prepared to help save a life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>BLS<\/strong> Stands for<strong>B<\/strong>asic <strong>L<\/strong>ife <strong>S<\/strong>upport. It refers to the skills used by emergency first responders, medical professionals, and more to help during a medical emergency. People who are trained in BLS will know how to use skills like cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for victims of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK537076\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cardiac arrest<\/a>, be able to clear airways for victims suffering from respiratory failure, and will be trained to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) to help restore normal heart function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any layperson can (and should) learn these skills, as they can help save lives. However,  if you want to get a job that uses these skills, you need to get BLS certification. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can I Become BLS Certified?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To become BLS certified, you will need to take a nationally accredited course. Then, after taking the course and passing the exams, you will be able to receive a card as proof of your certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can take the course in person or online from your computer or phone. It also includes the signs and symptoms of a heart attack.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of an AED (automated external defibrillator) for adults and children.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Additionally, the course includes the medical-legal aspects for professionals. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Treatment for choking victims.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This includes the Heimlich Maneuver, Adult, child, and infant FBAO (Foreign Body Airway Obstruction), and how to treat victims who are conscious or unconscious. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How to recognize a medical emergency. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While you can earn CPR certification from a standalone CPR class, the material learned in a standard CPR course is also covered in the BLS course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Needs a BLS Certification? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many different careers require BLS certification. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Doctors and nurses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EMTs and paramedics<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Police officers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Firefighters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lifeguards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dentists, dental assistants, and hygienists<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li> and more&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, you will need to have BLS certification if your job makes you likely to encounter a medical emergency. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the Difference Between BLS Certification and CPR Certification?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Basic Life Support Class is more advanced than the standard CPR class. In fact, BLS is a professional-level course designed for career rescuers. It is the standard for doctors and nurses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The BLS course contains all of the information from the standard CPR course and then some. You could say it&#8217;s a professional-level CPR course. The BLS course will teach you more advanced skills when compared to a standard CPR course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the BLS course covers 2-rescuer CPR. It also teaches you how to use a bag valve mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like the CPR course, the BLS course covers compression-only CPR. However, this was not always the case. In the past, only the CPR course included compression-only CPR. This is because it is easier for a layperson to perform. The BLS course, on the other hand, requires rescue breaths in addition to chest compressions. This is because the BLS course is designed for professionals who would likely have PPE such as a barrier or bag-valve mask handy. However, the BLS course now also covers compression-only CPR for situations in which PPE is unavailable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Much Does a BLS Certification Cost?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The cost for BLS certification varies based on the type of class and the provider. Mike was raised in New York, where at a young age he became an instructor for the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council, the American Safety Health Institute (ASHI), and the American Heart Association (AHA). He then earned a BS in Mathematics and trained to become a paramedic. In 1995, Mike began teaching emergency medical and continuing education classes at hospitals, schools, and other institutions. He has taught at Molloy College, New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital to name a few. In 1999, Mike founded the American AED CPR Association (AEDCPR), an organization specializing in emergency cardiac care training. Under his leadership, AEDCPR has expanded throughout the United States, and internationally into Europe, Asia, and Africa. Through their network of instructors and innovative website, they have trained over a million people in CPR, AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens . Mike helped develop one of the first online learning platforms for the NYS department of labor. He continues to develop new and innovative online tools. This is why the American AED CPR Association has been recognized as a leader in both online and blended classroom training. After years of teaching and performing emergency medical procedures, it was Mike who needed CPR. After an accident racing offshore powerboats, Mike was saved by a team of well-trained rescuers with only seconds to spare.
