It all depends on where on the body the burn is, how deep the damage is, and how the burn occurred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing when to seek emergency medical care can prevent or reduce serious complications. First, stop the burning process, make sure the scene is safe, and then assess the injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understanding Burn Degrees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ve probably heard burns described as first, second, or third-degree. Medical professionals may also use the terms superficial, partial-thickness, and full-thickness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First-Degree Burns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A first-degree, or superficial, burn affects only the outer layer of skin, known as the epidermis. Sunburn and brief contact with a hot object may cause this type of injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Red or pink skin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pain or tenderness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mild swelling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry skin without blisters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Small first-degree burns can usually be treated at home with proper cooling and wound care. Seek professional advice is the first-degree burn covers a very large area, or is not healing as expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Second-Degree Burns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A second-degree, or partial-thickness, burn damages the outer skin (epidermis) and part of the layer underneath (dermis).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Red, swollen skin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blisters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A wet or shiny appearance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Significant pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peeling or broken skin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While some smaller and shallower second-degree burns may heal on their own with proper wound care, larger and deeper burns should always be treated and monitored by a professional. Do not break blisters, since doing so will delay healing and increase the likelihood of infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Third-Degree Burns<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A third-degree, or full-thickness, burn destroys the full thickness of the skin and may extend into deeper tissue including the fat, muscle or bone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The skin may appear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>White, brown, black, or charred<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry, leathery, or waxy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deeply damaged<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A third-degree burn may cause little pain in the center. This is because they often damage the body&#8217;s nerve endings. <strong>Third-degree burns are always medical emergencies.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Cool a Thermal Burn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For burns caused by heat, hot liquid, steam, or a hot surface, begin cooling as soon as it is safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Move the person away from the heat source.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove rings, watches, and loose clothing near the burn <strong>before<\/strong> swelling develops.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do <strong>not<\/strong> attempt to remove clothing stuck to the skin. Doing so risks worsening the damage.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold the burn under cool but <strong>NOT cold<\/strong>, clean running water for about 20 minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep the rest of the person warm, especially with large burns or in young children.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After cooling, loosely cover the burn with a clean, nonstick dressing or cloth.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Never place ice directly on a burn. Ice and extremely cold water can further damage tissue. Do not apply butter, oil, toothpaste, or other home remedies. These may trap heat or contaminate the wound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Electrical Burns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Electrical burns can be more serious than they look. Electricity may travel through the body, damaging muscles and organs while the skin itself may only look to have a minor burn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not attempt to touch someone if they&#8217;re still in contact with a source of electricity. Shut off the electricity if it can be done safely and call 911.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Electrical injuries require medical evaluation, especially after:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>High-voltage exposure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lightning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Loss of consciousness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chest pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breathing problems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seizures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Visible electrical burns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, begin CPR and use an AED if available. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chemical Burns<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chemical burns may be caused by acids, alkalis, cleaners, industrial products, and other corrosive substances. Damage can continue as long as the chemical remains on the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a chemical burn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protect yourself from exposure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove contaminated clothing and jewelry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the chemical is a dry powder, carefully brush away excess material before rinsing, unless product instructions say otherwise.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rinse the skin with large amounts of running water for at least 20 minutes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not try to neutralize the chemical with another substance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the eyes are involved, begin flushing immediately and seek urgent medical care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Chemical burns need prompt medical evaluation when the substance is unknown, the injury is deep or extensive, the eyes are affected, or the person has breathing problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to Call 911 or Seek Emergency Care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Call 911 or seek emergency medical care for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Any third-degree burn<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A large or deep burn<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Burns involving the face, eyes, hands, feet, genitals, or major joints<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Burns that completely circle an arm, leg, chest, or neck<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electrical burns or serious electrical shocks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Significant chemical burns<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Burns caused by explosions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Burns associated with smoke inhalation or breathing difficulty<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Burns with loss of consciousness, confusion, or signs of shock<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Serious burns in infants, young children, older adults, or people with significant medical conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Seek medical care if a smaller burn becomes increasingly red, swollen, painful, begins draining pus, or is accompanied by fever. Mike was raised in New York, where at a young age he became an instructor for the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council, the American Safety Health Institute (ASHI), and the American Heart Association (AHA). He then earned a BS in Mathematics and trained to become a paramedic. In 1995, Mike began teaching emergency medical and continuing education classes at hospitals, schools, and other institutions. He has taught at Molloy College, New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital to name a few. In 1999, Mike founded the American AED CPR Association (AEDCPR), an organization specializing in emergency cardiac care training. Under his leadership, AEDCPR has expanded throughout the United States, and internationally into Europe, Asia, and Africa. Through their network of instructors and innovative website, they have trained over a million people in CPR, AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens . Mike helped develop one of the first online learning platforms for the NYS department of labor. He continues to develop new and innovative online tools. This is why the American AED CPR Association has been recognized as a leader in both online and blended classroom training. After years of teaching and performing emergency medical procedures, it was Mike who needed CPR. After an accident racing offshore powerboats, Mike was saved by a team of well-trained rescuers with only seconds to spare.
