A person in trouble may not scream, splash, or wave for help. They may bob at the surface, struggle to keep their mouth above water, or suddenly become still. In a drowning emergency, fast action matters, but your safety must come first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Call for Help ASAP<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The moment you suspect someone is drowning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shout for help.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell a specific person: \u201cCall 911 now.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask someone to get an AED if one is nearby.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep your eyes on the person in the water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not assume someone else has called.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are alone, call 911 as soon as you can safely do so. If the person is not breathing, begin care immediately after getting them out of the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Rescue Safely: Reach or Throw First<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not rush into the water unless you are trained and know it is safe. If the water is over your head, a panicked drowning victim can unintentionally pull you under with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use this rescue order:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reach:<\/strong> Lie down to keep yourself stable and reach with a pole, towel, branch, paddle, or pool skimmer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Throw:<\/strong> Throw something that floats, such as a life ring, pool noodle, cooler, kickboard, or life jacket.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Row:<\/strong> Use a boat, board, or other floating object if available and safe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Go only if trained:<\/strong> Enter the water only if you have rescue training, the scene is safe, and you have flotation support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A safe rescue means not making yourself a second victim. Keep yourself low, use <a href=\"https:\/\/ndpa.org\/shop-the-best-pool-safety-products-for-summer\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/ndpa.org\/shop-the-best-pool-safety-products-for-summer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">flotation<\/a> whenever possible, and avoid direct contact with a panicked person unless you are trained to manage it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Check the Person After Rescue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Once the person is out of the water:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If the person is unresponsive:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Move them to a safe, flat area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tap their shoulders and shout, \u201cAre you okay?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check for normal breathing and signs of circulation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Look for severe coughing, confusion, blue or gray skin, or extreme tiredness.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If the person is awake and breathing:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep them calm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep them warm, and remove wet clothing if possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cover them with towels, blankets, or dry clothing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Monitor their breathing closely.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wait for emergency medical help.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if the person seems better, they should be evaluated after a serious drowning event, especially if they were underwater, lost consciousness, needed rescue breathing, or are still coughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the person is unresponsive but breathing normally, place them on their side in the recovery position. This helps keep the airway open and allows fluid or vomit to drain from the mouth. Continue watching their breathing until help arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Start CPR if There Are No Signs of Circulation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Drowning usually causes a lack of oxygen. That means rescue breaths are especially important when someone is not breathing after being pulled from the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Place them on their back on a firm, flat surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Open the airway by tilting the head back and lifting the chin.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give <strong>2 rescue breaths<\/strong> if you are trained.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give <strong>30 chest compressions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Continue cycles of <strong>30 compressions and 2 breaths<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use an AED as soon as it is available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For chest compressions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Place your hands in the center of the chest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Push hard and fast.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let the chest fully rise between compressions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not stop unless the person breathes normally, another trained rescuer takes over, an AED tells you to stop, or emergency services arrive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Before using an AED:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make both you and the victim are not in standing water.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dry the chest quickly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply the pads as shown on the device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow the AED voice prompts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are not trained or are not comfortable giving breaths, do hands-only CPR. Chest compressions are still better than doing nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do <strong>NOT<\/strong> do the following: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Do not waste time trying to \u201cdrain water\u201d from the lungs. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not hold the person upside down. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not press on the stomach unless they are clearly choking. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Understand the \u201cSecondary Drowning\u201d Myth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Terms like \u201csecondary drowning\u201d and \u201cdry drowning\u201d are often used to describe complications after a drowning emergency, but the terms are misleading. Drowning does not suddenly happen days later without warning. However, a person who inhaled water can develop breathing problems after the incident. It happens when fluid builds up in the lungs, reducing one&#8217;s ability to take in oxygen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Get medical help right away if the person develops:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trouble breathing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A worsening cough<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chest pain or discomfort<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeated vomiting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Confusion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extreme sleepiness<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pale, blue, or gray skin<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fast, noisy, or labored breathing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms after a water emergency should always be taken seriously. When in doubt, call 911 or seek urgent medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prevent Drowning Before It Happens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Prevention is the best protection. After an accident racing offshore powerboats, Mike was saved by a team of well-trained rescuers with only seconds to spare. Under his leadership, AEDCPR has expanded throughout the United States, and internationally into Europe, Asia, and Africa. Through their network of instructors and innovative website, they have trained over a million people in CPR, AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens . Mike helped develop one of the first online learning platforms for the NYS department of labor. He continues to develop new and innovative online tools. This is why the American AED CPR Association has been recognized as a leader in both online and blended classroom training. After years of teaching and performing emergency medical procedures, it was Mike who needed CPR.
