Whether it\u2019s someone choking on food, an infant choking on something they put in their mouth, or a foreign object blocking someone\u2019s airway, choking can be a life-threatening emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Statistics on choking are largely unreliable. Most choking incidents are resolved without medical intervention and go unreported. We do know that, on average, 5000 \u2013 6000 people die from choking in the United States each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that almost anyone can help prevent a choking emergency from becoming a fatality. However, it is essential to know what to do and act quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Happens During Choking?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Choking occurs when food or a foreign object blocks the airway, therefore preventing normal breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The blockage may be caused by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Small toys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Batteries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dentures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other foreign objects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Without oxygen, permanent brain damage can begin within minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Partial vs. Complete Airway Obstruction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Not every choking episode is immediately life-threatening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Partial Airway Obstruction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The airway is only partially blocked. A partial airway obstruction can be broken down into two subcategories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Partial obstruction with good exchange<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Partial obstruction with poor exchange<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Good Exchange<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs of a partial airway obstruction with good exchange:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The victim can cough forcefully<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The victim is able to speak<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They can breathe effectively, air moves in and out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What should you do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Encourage them to keep coughing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A strong cough is often the most effective way to clear the obstruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do&nbsp;<strong>not<\/strong>&nbsp;hit them on the back if they are coughing effectively, as this could worsen the obstruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue monitoring them closely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Poor Exchange<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs of a partial airway obstruction with poor air exchange:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Can barely speak<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Coughing is silent and ineffective<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cannot breathe effectively<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A partial airway obstruction with poor airflow is a life-threatening medical emergency<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Complete Airway Obstruction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The airway is fully blocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs of a complete airway obstruction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The victim is unable to speak<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The victim can not cough<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They make little or no sound<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The victim turns blue around the lips or face<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They lose consciousness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A complete airway obstruction is a life-threatening medical emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What To Do If Someone Is Choking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step is to determine the severity of the choking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If someone has a complete obstruction or a partial obstruction with poor airflow, it is essential to act immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Help a Conscious Choking Adult or Child One Year or Older<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Confirm they are choking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask: &#8220;Are you choking?&#8221; and \u201cCan you speak?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they say yes: Stand by and be ready to assist if it gets worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If they can not speak: Continue to step 2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Get permission to assist<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tell them \u201cI\u2019ve been traind, I\u2019m going to help you\u201d. If they push you away or indicate they don\u2019t want your help, you must back off until they lose consciousness. If they allow you to help, go to step 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Perform the Heimlich Maneuver<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Stand behind the person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Position yourself behind the victim, placing one leg between their legs for balance. Take a wide stance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wrap your arms around their waist.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make a fist with your knuckles pointing up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place the thumb side just above the belly button.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grab your fist with your other hand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deliver quick inward and upward thrusts.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Thrusts should be delivered with enough force to knock the wind out of someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continue until:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The object comes out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person begins breathing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person becomes unconscious<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What If the Person Is Pregnant or Obese?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Perform\u00a0<strong>chest thrusts<\/strong> instead of abdominal thrusts\u00a0by placing your hands on the center of the chest and pushing straight backward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Helping a Conscious Infant (Under One Year Old)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Infants can not tell us that they are choking. When an infant is choking, they will kick, thrash, and attempt to scream but will not make any sound. Infants will quickly start turning blue (cyanotic).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Provide Back Blows and Chest Thrusts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give 5 Back Blows<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pick up the infant and hold them with their head lower than their body.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support the infant face-down along your forearm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support the head and neck.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deliver\u00a0<strong>five firm back blows<\/strong>\u00a0between the shoulder blades.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give 5 Chest Thrusts<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Turn the infant face-up.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using two fingers, give\u00a0<strong>five quick chest thrusts<\/strong>\u00a0in the center of the chest just below the nipple line. Similar to CPR compressions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alternate back blows and chest thrusts:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>5 back blows<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>5 chest thrusts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat the cycle<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Continue back blows and chest thrusts until any of the following:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The object comes out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The infant becomes unresponsive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EMS takes over<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Help an Unconscious Choking Victim<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If the choking victim loses consciousness:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Carefully lower them to the floor (or table for an infant).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have someone call 911 if it hasn&#8217;t already been done.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Begin CPR immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>During CPR, look in the victim\u2019s mouth to see if the obstruction is visible. If you can see it, try to remove it. If not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For an adult: Perform a blind finger sweep.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For a child or infant: Do NOT perform a blind finger sweep.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Continue CPR until:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The object is removed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person begins breathing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EMS takes over<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What If the Person Is Pregnant or Obese?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Use chest thrusts in place of abdominal thrusts. If you cannot wrap your arms around a person\u2019s chest, it may be easier if they were lying down or standing with their back against a wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Should I Do if I Begin to Choke?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Place your hands around your neck to give the universal sign for choking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do not walk away from people and try to relieve the obstruction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What if I Choke While Alone?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are alone and cannot cough or breathe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Call 911 if possible. Enhanced 911 can guide EMS to your location. Bang the phone or make noise to let the dispatcher know it\u2019s an emergency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perform self-abdominal thrusts by pushing your upper abdomen forcefully against the back of a sturdy chair, countertop, or railing. Plan ahead and find a usable object before you choke. Performing the Heimlich Maneuver on yourself is nearly impossible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you can not relieve the obstruction, run outside. EMS will find you more quickly. A bystander may be able to assist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preventing Choking Emergencies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10811631\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">choking incidents are preventable<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cut food into smaller, bite-sized pieces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encourage slow eating.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid laughing or talking with food in your mouth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aedcpr.com\/cpr-aed-certification-training\/\">Learn CPR,<\/a> the Heimlich Maneuver, and First Aid for Choking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For small children:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cut grapes in quarters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slice hot dogs lengthwise before cutting into small pieces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid giving whole nuts or popcorn to young children.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep small objects away from infants and toddlers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check toys for age-appropriate safety warnings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Should You See a Doctor After Choking?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if the object is removed successfully, medical evaluation may be necessary if the victim has:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Throat pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Persistent coughing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trouble swallowing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chest pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wheezing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fever (possible aspiration pneumonia)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Food or liquid may have entered the lungs, leading to complications that require treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why First Aid &amp; CPR Training Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone can help save a life.
