{"id":1121,"date":"2025-11-01T15:54:03","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T19:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.aedcpr.com\/articles\/?p=1121"},"modified":"2025-11-01T15:54:04","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T19:54:04","slug":"volunteer-emt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.aedcpr.com\/articles\/volunteer-emt\/","title":{"rendered":"The Critical Role of Volunteer EMTs Serving Our Communities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Volunteer EMTs or emergency medical technicians (EMTs) are the backbone of our communities, saving lives and enforcing public safety every time they\u2019re on duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What do volunteer EMTS do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They rush onto the scene whenever there\u2019s an emergency whether it be an accident, a medical emergency, or the aftermath of a natural disaster to provide emergency services such as AED,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aedcpr.com\/articles\/important-cpr-facts-and-myths\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CPR<\/a>, and first aid to those in need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of this, they are also considered first responders because they are trained healthcare professionals responsible for stabilizing patients and transporting them with ambulance services to a hospital where the patients can receive more specialized care. Paramedics also fall under the first responder umbrella but are considered the highest level of EMS first responders and undergo more advanced paramedic training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volunteer EMTs or paramedics differ from paid EMTS because the volunteers aren\u2019t getting paid. Paid EMTs also work full-time (usually at least 40 hours per week), whereas the schedules of volunteer EMTs vary wildly. Volunteers gain firsthand experience in emergency services in the medical field and are often moved alone by their desire to protect, serve, and save their communities. Instead of benefits like a salary or insurance plan, volunteer EMT benefits include developing life-saving skills and life-long relationships within their communities because they serve such a noble purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are EMTS in demand?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Volunteer EMTs are incredibly important, especially in rural areas where there aren\u2019t as many resources and funding dedicated to a region with fewer people and located in a place that isn\u2019t as accessible. Fewer people often means fewer emergencies, which makes it harder to financially justify full-time paid EMS professionals. It is therefore common for volunteer EMS to make up a rural area\u2019s entire emergency medical services (EMS) system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, wherever you may be, EMTs or paramedics are always in demand. Even in more urban areas, there are still EMT shortages, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, because of widespread burnout, increasing workloads, and underpayment. In fact, nearly one-third of EMTs nationwide in 2021 quit due to unsustainable conditions, illustrating the dire need for more people to train and for more funding to invest in people\u2019s training and well-being. Without EMTs, our communities would greatly suffer. We are already paying the price for overworking our current EMTs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Volunteer EMT Training<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Volunteer EMTs must go through the same state-approved training and have the same qualifications as a paid EMT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many EMS agencies offer EMT programs and EMT certifications you can enroll in to at least get started on your journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Become a Volunteer EMT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking for a place to start? He then earned a BS in Mathematics and trained to become a paramedic. In 1995, Mike began teaching emergency medical and continuing education classes at hospitals, schools, and other institutions. In 1999, Mike founded the American AED CPR Association (AEDCPR), an organization specializing in emergency cardiac care training. Mike helped develop one of the first online learning platforms for the NYS department of labor. He continues to develop new and innovative online tools. This is why the American AED CPR Association has been recognized as a leader in both online and blended classroom training. After years of teaching and performing emergency medical procedures, it was Mike who needed CPR. After an accident racing offshore powerboats, Mike was saved by a team of well-trained rescuers with only seconds to spare. Mike was raised in New York, where at a young age he became an instructor for the American Red Cross, the National Safety Council, the American Safety Health Institute (ASHI), and the American Heart Association (AHA). He then earned a BS in Mathematics and trained to become a paramedic. In 1995, Mike began teaching emergency medical and continuing education classes at hospitals, schools, and other institutions. He has taught at Molloy College, New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital to name a few. In 1999, Mike founded the American AED CPR Association (AEDCPR), an organization specializing in emergency cardiac care training. Under his leadership, AEDCPR has expanded throughout the United States, and internationally into Europe, Asia, and Africa. Through their network of instructors and innovative website, they have trained over a million people in CPR, AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens . Mike helped develop one of the first online learning platforms for the NYS department of labor. He continues to develop new and innovative online tools. This is why the American AED CPR Association has been recognized as a leader in both online and blended classroom training. After years of teaching and performing emergency medical procedures, it was Mike who needed CPR. After an accident racing offshore powerboats, Mike was saved by a team of well-trained rescuers with only seconds to spare.
