You never, ever want to think about it happening. Still, it\u2019s crucial to understand what you should do if something like this happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If an infant near you is experiencing cardiac arrest or a breathing emergency, you need to stay calm and be prepared to react.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We recommend every parent, guardian, or adult enroll in a\u00a0live, in-person CPR course.\u00a0It is, without question, the best way to learn how to safely perform chest compressions on an infant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ensure your qualifications and comfortability in performing CPR on an infant, practice CPR on a doll with a healthcare professional or CPR-certified instructor present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the meantime, before you enroll in a class, this is important, life-saving information to be aware of in the event you need to start CPR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CPR Requirements for An Infant<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before you start, check if the baby or infant is unresponsive. Shout their name and tap the bottom of their foot to get their attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the infant does not respond, have someone call 911 <\/strong>immediately. If there isn\u2019t anyone else available, call 911 yourself and put the operator on speakerphone as you start infant CPR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you perform CPR on an infant?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. Place the infant on a safe<\/strong>, firm, and flat surface<\/strong> such as an empty table or the floor.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Get close to the infant\u2019s face, looking and listening for signs of breathing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. If the infant is gasping or not breathing, place your thumbs (side-by-side)<\/strong> on the center of their bare chest, just below the nipples (in the middle of the breastbone). You can also use two fingers<\/strong> on the same hand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Push down hard and fast and let the infant\u2019s chest rise to its normal position after each compression. Give 30 chest compressions<\/strong>, go 1 \u00bd inches deep (or 4 cm)<\/strong>, push at a rate of 100 to 120<\/strong> per minute.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. After 30 compressions, you need to perform rescue breaths by first tilting the head<\/strong> of the infant back slightly to open the airway. (One hand should be on the infant\u2019s forehead, a finger on your other hand should lift their chin.)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. With the infant\u2019s head tilted, place your mouth over both the infant\u2019s mouth and nose<\/strong>, creating a seal. Give two breaths<\/strong>, breathing into their mouth and nose with your mouth with enough air to make their chest rise. If you breathe into just the infant\u2019s mouth, keep their nose closed to prevent oxygen from escaping.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. Blow into the infant\u2019s mouth for about 1 second <\/strong>and listen and feel for breathing. Their chest should be rising and falling. If not, reposition the infant\u2019s head.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Repeat 30 compressions and 2 breaths<\/strong>, breathing until help arrives or until you notice obvious signs of life such as moving, coughing, breathing normally, crying, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    If you haven\u2019t had the chance to call 911 yet, do so after 2 minutes of CPR or 5 sets of 30 compressions:2 breaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When to Stop During a Medical Emergency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    While performing baby CPR, keep going with repeated cycles of 30 compressions to 2 breaths until one of the following occurs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      \n
    1. The infant becomes responsive (exhibiting signs of life as mentioned above)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. A healthcare professional arrives on scene<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. The scene becomes dangerous, or you are physically unable to continue<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      If two people are able to perform infant CPR, the recommended ratio is 15 compressions<\/strong> to 2 breaths. <\/strong>One person should deliver 15 chest compressions as the second person delivers 2 breaths. They can then swap roles as they maintain this ratio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      What should you do differently when performing CPR on an infant?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      The CPR approach is different when it comes to infants because you typically use the tips of your fingers<\/strong> to perform chest compressions instead of the heel of your hands with adults.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The compression depth for infants is 1 \u00bd inches or 4 cm<\/strong> compared to at least 2 to 2.4 inches (5-6 centimeters) for adults. Both infants and adults require a compression rate of around 100 to 120 compressions per minute.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

      You must overall be gentler with infants because they are significantly more fragile. It\u2019s important to support their head when titling it back and provide one rescue breath every three to five seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1999, Mike founded the American AED CPR Association (AEDCPR), an organization specializing in emergency cardiac care training. Under his leadership, AEDCPR has expanded throughout the United States, and internationally into Europe, Asia, and Africa. Through their network of instructors and innovative website, they have trained over a million people in CPR, AED, First Aid, and Bloodborne Pathogens . Mike helped develop one of the first online learning platforms for the NYS department of labor. He continues to develop new and innovative online tools. This is why the American AED CPR Association has been recognized as a leader in both online and blended classroom training. After years of teaching and performing emergency medical procedures, it was Mike who needed CPR. After an accident racing offshore powerboats, Mike was saved by a team of well-trained rescuers with only seconds to spare.
