AEDs are designed for public use. They provide clear voice prompts that guide you step-by-step. An AED should only be used on individuals who are unresponsive and have no pulse.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person is wet or on a damp surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person has an exceptionally hairy chest. The AED pads need to be applied directly to the skin, so if the person has a hairy chest, you may need to remove the hair before you begin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, note that special pads are required for those under eight years old. If these pads are not available, do not use the regular pads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to Use an AED vs CPR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Both CPR and the use of an AED are important in responding to emergencies that involve cardiac arrest, but they serve different purposes, so it\u2019s essential to know when each is appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Purpose:<\/strong>\u00a0CPR helps maintain blood flow to the brain and vital organs until professional help arrives or an AED is available.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>When to Use:<\/strong>\u00a0Perform CPR immediately if the person is unresponsive, not breathing, and has no pulse. Note that this information should not replace formal CPR training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Turn on the AED:<\/strong>\u00a0Open the device and turn it on. AEDs typically have a power button or open automatically when the case is opened.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Attach the Pads:<\/strong>\u00a0Follow the voice prompts and place the adhesive pads on the person\u2019s bare chest. One pad is placed on the upper right side and the other on the lower left side of the chest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Analyze the Rhythm:<\/strong>\u00a0Allow the AED to analyze the heart\u2019s rhythm. Mike helped develop one of the first online learning platforms for the NYS department of labor. He continues to develop new and innovative online tools.
